“A book I will read over and over again.” The Romance Reviews (TRR) – Training Season #mmromance #gay

January 23, 2014 by Leta

“TRAINING SEASON is a tale told with such flair and tenderness, and with such insight into the two main characters that this is a book I will read over and over again.”

“A memorable story so sweetly told that it’s a real hardship when the story ends and you realise that even though Rob and Matty have their HEA, you don’t because you want to keep on reading!”

Fifteen Free Copies of Training Season To The First Fifteen People to Comment On This Post! #mmromance #printbook

January 20, 2014 by Leta

So, weird shit happens, right? Like, for example, when I got the file for the print cover of Training Season, I checked it over really well and it was all perfect. However, later, when I was doing some formatting, it came to my attention that the cover needed slightly altered to work with CreateSpace, so requested the change from the cover artist, who was very prompt with it. Unfortunately, I didn’t check the cover as well as I should have because I thought the only change being made to the file was one of size. Still, I should have checked every aspect a lot more closely than I did because…dun, dun, dun…I didn’t realize that the back cover had a blurb that wasn’t even remotely related to Training Season. Um, oops.

So, yeah, I clicked Publish with it that way.

*headdesk*

Now I’ve got fifteen books with a blurb on the back about some woman named Elizabeth, her daughter Clare, and a dude named Nathan. Everything else about these copies is totally correct. I’ve looked at every page and the rest of the book, the front cover, etc, is absolutely accurate.

So, what to do with these fifteen screwed up copies? I guess give them away for free to anyone who’ll have ’em!

Reply below if you’re willing to home a copy of Training Season with a back blurb that’s all wrong. LOL! The first fifteen to reply will be sent these screwed up books for free. I’ll even sign them if you like, because apparently some people want signed copies of the books? (OMG, that blows my mind!)  Um, and because I’m already losing money on this endeavor, please don’t hate me for restricting this to US folks only? I just don’t think I can afford international shipping for fifteen books when I’ve already paid for the books to be printed, etc.

Consider these rare collector’s editions? Or something? OMG this is embarrassing. Hello, my name is Leta, and I’m a dumbass. But you can get a book for free because I am. Just let me know.

See? The front cover is right. Who looks at a back cover anyway? Oh, right, someone trying to decide if they want to buy the book. *headdesk* FML.

“Beyond the MC’s are some wonderful side characters! Sooooo many great characters!”

“The descriptive writing is so beautiful too – I hate when authors are so heavy handed and verbose that I zone out – Leta Blake got the balance just right.”

“It is truly a story you won’t want to put down.”

Know What the Book is About #writing

January 16, 2014 by Leta

Reading reviews for Training Season has been a bemusing and fascinating experience. There is, of course, no way to please all the people all the time, and what one reader likes another reader hates. It’s wild to watch many people declare a character real, perfect, amazing and say they’ve fallen in love with him, and then to see another person declare that character boring, badly drawn, or unbearable. At this point, the positive outweighs the negative, and I’m hopeful it stays that way, but, as I said, it’s been a wild ride.

Given that Training Season was in, or hovered around the edges of, Amazon’s Top Ten Gay Romances for over two weeks in December, I think that I must have done something right along the way. And one thing that I’ve been mulling over during all of this hoopla is reader expectations and how they seem to play into the reception of the book. Some readers are disappointed that ranching or skating doesn’t take front and center, though most seem fine with how both things are presented. The thing is, I did a ton more research on ranching and skating than reveals itself in the book itself. And there’s a reason for that.

See, the book was never about those things. Sure, I could’ve written a book about the ins and outs of figure skating, with a lot of competitions, and scenes of skating on the ice. I could’ve written a book about ranching, featuring thrilling moments of escaped or wounded cattle, encounters with dangerous wild animals, or life-or-death adventures on the range. Instead, I wrote a book about something else entirely.

I wrote a book about a romance and about a young man’s emotional growth. I suppose some readers who say this book is more of a coming of age novel, might have a point, though the romance being central definitely makes it a romance in my book. But the book was never about the world of figure skating, or the adventures of ranching. It was always about how a person falls in love, makes choices, processes loss and pain, and moves into a stronger, better place in his life.

There were points when I was writing when I felt like I could take the book in another direction, something more sports or more ranch, but when it came down to it, I realized the book I was really writing and stayed true to it. I think that’s part of why this book has been so surprisingly successful in the scheme of things. Not that readers don’t want books about sports or about ranching! But rather, I think readers want a story that it is told true all the way through, and if I’d wavered from the direction the characters originally set out in, I think the book would have been a failure.

Thank you to all the readers out there–every last one!–who have loved or hated it so far. Y’all are the best. Thank you for letting these characters into your life for even just a little while.

Cloud On My Tongue and Decimate: Training Season Extras! #music #davidford #toriamos

January 11, 2014 by Leta

As I mentioned in a previous post, I always write to music. The following songs definitely influenced or inspired aspects of Training Season. This first song? Absolutely inspired the meet-cute in the book.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/Tf8oNq9uTPU]

For some reason, “Decimate” by David Ford has always been Rob’s song in my mind. I’m not sure why, but I think this represents how he feels about Matty. I’d listen to this one when I was trying to figure him out. If anyone can figure out what makes this a Rob song, let me know. 😉

It was one of those books that I wanted to stay up all night to finish and when I couldn’t, I just kept thinking all night of where the book was going to go. I woke up this morning with the need to finish it because I couldn’t keep holding on waiting for the HEA to happen. And now that I’ve finished, I want to go back and reread it.”

Nights Like These and Maybe: Training Season Extras! #music #lucero #ingridmichaelson

January 10, 2014 by Leta

In my little series of music posts about my soundtrack while writing Training Season, here are two more of Rob’s songs. Both of them are very much how he thinks about Matty, the situation, and all of his hopes, dreams and fears. “Nights Like These” is the most despairing of the two and the reference to the only boy who ever broke your heart is a Figure Skating reference, but of course. “Maybe” by Ingrid Michaelson is a bit more upbeat, though I think hopeful resignation is the name of the game with that song.

What Does A Cowboy Do Anyway? – Research for Training Season #ranching #mmromance

January 7, 2014 by Leta

As you might have guessed, I don’t own a small cattle ranch in Northwestern Montana. So, when it came down to making Rob’s rancherly duties more realistic, I needed to do some research. Luckily, as usual, the internet doth provide! All praise the internet!

I’m not sure if you guys know about WikiHow, but it is a really awesome and fascinating website that has pages on how to do just about anything in the world. How to tie your shoelaces. How to castrate bulls. How to open a bakery.

And…dun, dun, dun…how to run a cattle ranch!

SONY DSC

Reading over that page gave me some general ideas about what activities Rob and his ranch hands would be getting into on the ranch, and gave me a few talking points, too. Such as, did you know:

Be aware that for most North American (especially those in Canada and northern USA) and European ranches winter feeding is the biggest source of financial loss in a ranch operation. It is often what makes or breaks the ranch as a business, so requires very careful management with an eye to absolutely no waste

This is especially true in Northwestern Montana where the winters can be brutal and a small cattle ranch is tough to keep up. There was another site that was helpful to me, also, when developing ideas on what Rob might do with his day on a ranch, how he would talk about his activities, what terms he’d use, etc. I’ll post about that on another day.

In the meantime, if you want to know about how to run a cattle ranch, click on the above link!

The Promise & At This Point In My Life: Training Season Extras! #tracychapman #music

January 4, 2014 by Leta

I almost always write with a soundtrack. Either music is playing as I write, or I have certain songs in my mind that capture the vibe of what I’m going for with a certain section of the book. Sometimes it’s the lyrics that speak to me and other times it’s the music. In this case, it was definitely both.

The last third of Training Season was stamped with these two songs. I had them on repeat as I worked out the end of the book. I wanted the tenderness and growth to be all over those words.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/wlCJKsyQXMo]
The words at 4:19 through the end of the song are what I wanted Matty to be expressing during that part of the book.

[youtube=http://youtu.be/cQ0kh3k0LKE]
Oh, this song. Is there anyone on earth who doesn’t have the feelings in them that this song expresses? Matty definitely had them and I wanted there to be that kind of longing and tenderness in the book. I hope I succeeded.

“Read this book. Now. You will NOT be disappointed.” Review: Training Season by Leta Blake #mmromance #amreading

January 2, 2014 by Leta

I am giddy over this new review! Thank you so much Ninjakitty! 😀

Review: Training Season by Leta Blake | Mama Kitty Reviews.

To quote:

“If you are looking something real, and passion that leaps off the pages, read this book. Now. You will NOT be disappointed.”

“This book felt like a real relationship, crazy hits of jealousy, moments of exasperation and the very real knife of sometimes making decisions that suck. This is the only time I have ever, and I mean EVER, emailed an author halfway through reading a book to exclaim how much I loved it.”

“What if you were madly in love, and your love treated you terribly? Abused you, mocked you, crushed your dreams and didn’t even kiss you before it screwed you? What if sometimes that love sent you flying, touching the edges of greatness and sending you away with love pouring from every particle of your body? No, this is not an episode of Teen Mom or even the latest and greatest BDSM novel. This is figure skating, and just because you might wear eye shadow doesn’t mean you get cry like a girl.”

Whips or Shopping? Who Can Choose? Oh My! #MFRWhooks #mmromance #bdsm

“I have leather horse whips, actually,” Rob said.

“You do?” Matty sat up, nearly smacking his forehead against Rob’s chin.

“Of course. Have you seen my ranch?”

“Oh my God, go get them!”

Rob laughed and stood up slowly, stretching. “Actually, I was thinking we should head into Missoula to do some shopping.”

“You’re passing up whips for shopping?”

“You’re bitching about shopping?”

“I feel so torn!” Matty pulled at his hair. “Oh my God. You suck.”
