Writer Wednesday: Bread, Salt and Wine by Dev Bentham

June 12, 2013 by Leta

Today we’re talking with Dev Bentham’s characters in her new book, Bread, Salt and Wine!

DB_BreadSaltandWine

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?
I’m George Zajac, L’Ouest’s new catering chef. It’s a second career for me. A few years ago I traded on Wall Street and had an apartment overlooking Central Park. That all went to shit, which is what it is. In Los Angeles no one really knows me and it’s better that way. There is this waiter, Kenny Marks, who… well, I like his company. I’m too messed up to get involved anyone, but I keep thinking maybe he’d go for a friends with benefits kind of thing.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?
We work together. And hell no, it wasn’t love at first sight. I don’t do relationships. Can’t. But Kenny’s a great guy. He’s smart and funny, sexy as hell, makes me feel good when I’m around him. But no, it’s not love.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his?
Ah shit, do I have to talk about this? Let me just say, I’ve got issues. Sexual issues. Let’s leave it at that. As for Kenny, the thing that frustrates me most about him is that he’s so out there. I mean, you wouldn’t need to spend two second with him to know he’s gay. Which is okay for him, but I don’t want anyone making assumptions about me because they’ve seen me with him. I don’t need to shout out to the whole world that I’m gay, okay? I mean, it’s none of their business, right?

What is your best quality? What about his?
My best quality? I don’t know, I’m good cook I guess.
Kenny, he’s the bravest man I’ve ever met.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?
That the nightmares would stop and I could be with someone like Kenny without breaking into a sweat or needing him to—that we could just be together like normal people. Like, well, lovers.

Now, let’s talk to the author!

Dev, what other book/series would you compare your current offering to?

This is the fourth, and last, book in my Tarnished Souls series. Each story in the series highlights a particular Jewish holiday. They are all stand-alone novels, independent in that you can start anywhere in the series but linked by characters who float between books. For example, Kenny showed up as a childhood friend of the main character in Learning from Isaac and George employed the protagonist in Sacred Hearts and yet none of that history is important for understanding Bread, Salt and Wine.

What’s next for you?
What’s immediately next is that I have another story coming out next week from Amber Allure, Painting in the Rain, a novella set on the Oregon Coast. The story I’m working on right now involves a small town veterinarian, a big city artist and a bunch of dogs.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
George had a terrible childhood. He wonders if perhaps some wounds never heal. And while George is a fictional character, far too many of us are wandering around with our own bleeding hearts. Thinking about that makes me sad.

***

Blurb:
Some wounds never heal. George Zajac grew up in a religious family with a father who beat “the swish” out of him. Now he’s a troubled man. At thirty-eight he moves across the country to start a new life in Los Angeles, working as the catering chef for a prestigious French Restaurant. Kenny Marks, a writer who’s currently waiting tables, is everything George cannot be—flamboyant, proud and sexually confident. Enthralled by Kenny, and against his own better judgment, George agrees to a date. Sparks fly. The sex is better than good. But even after the two get close, George remains crippled by humiliating sexual hang-ups. Still haunted by his childhood, he lingers in the closet and can’t commit to a relationship with Kenny. Love is the great healer, but is it enough? George’s emotional scars could drive Kenny away, and with him, George’s last chance at happiness.

Hardbacks & Paperbacks Priced Lower Than EBooks

June 10, 2013 by Leta

Wow, so this is new. Recently, I’ve been confronted with the option to pay between $2 and $5 less for actual physical books than their ebook versions. And it’s not just books, either. It’s true of CDs as well. And, wow, I’m surprised at how hard the choice is.

Not for CDs. That’s easy. I get the option of ripping the mp3s and having a hard copy with pretty pictures. I’ll take the CD, thanks.

But the book! Oh, man, I feel like such an anti-hipster asshole saying this. But, here we go. I really love reading on my e-readers at night for one ridiculously lazy reason. I don’t have to get out of bed to turn out the lights. I know right? Yeah. I know.

But it’s true.

Books vs E-Books

Books vs E-Books infographic

So, here I am trying to decide–do I buy this lovely hardback book for $5 less than the e-book? Or do I get the e-book because I’m more likely to actually read it due to the fact that I do 99% of my reading in bed before going to sleep and…I don’t have to get out of bed and turn out the light? Or roll over to the other side of the bed, reach really far, and turn off the bedside lamp?

Holy crap! I’m lazy!

So, I guess I’ll get the hardcover. But, wow, I actually had to think about it.

What do you all think is behind this new movement of pricing the physical objects (CDs, books) lower than the e-book? Do you choose the physical or e-book version when presented with this choice?

Stalking Dreams – by Leta Blake, a FREE Love Has No Boundaries Story

June 7, 2013 by Leta

stalking-dreams-web-copy
Cover by Dar Albert!

I’m excited to announce that my FREE story for the Love Has No Boundaries event is now available! You can read it HERE!

I was so inspired by the prompt at Goodreads for a story about a young man who had dealt with being stalked by a stranger and the resultant issues that might bring up for him that I’ve already written 45k words of a corresponding full length novel and have a plan for a full length sequel, too. I hope to have the first novel done and out by the end of the year, if luck is on my side. And the plan is to have the sequel available in 2014.

I’m very happy with this short story. I feel like it accomplishes a lot and leaves the reader wanting to know more about the situation and these characters. At least, I hope that’s true because see above about the upcoming novels based in this universe!

Thank you to everyone who reads it. I hope you enjoy it! Feel free to spread the word! It will also be available for free download to ereaders very soon and I will post about that when it happens. In the meantime….

Fill This Hole

May 6, 2013 by Leta

instant-crack-filler-76286029

I was thinking about this thing with Amazon and their attempt to de-smut their company. Is there any independent site out there set up for people to sell their smutty books without hoops to jump through? I know that Smashwords allows the sale of all kinds of smutty smut, even the stuff Amazon won’t allow, but the buyer has to opt into the Adult Filter in order to see said books. I’m curious if there is a site out there similar to Smashwords or Bandcamp for independent music where the author/publisher can upload their trashy smut and not have to worry about censorship of searches? And if not, then that seems a niche that needs filled, guys.

Someone please provide me a link to such a resource? Or someone please go make this store a reality? I think you’ll make some money for sure. Oh, indeed.

ETA: Apparently, rumor has it, one very excellent and well-known erotica writer is going to make this a reality! Whoot!

Writer Wednesday: B.D. Heywood and Eternal Samurai

April 24, 2013 by Leta

bd cover FINAL front cover hi res

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

Arisada: Watashi wa Saito Arisada. I am Saito Arisada, but please, call me by my first name, Arisada. After all, we are friends here. I was born in 1155, the third son of a noble Japanese family. When I was nine, I was sent to the Buddhist temple at Mii-dera, just east of Kyoto, to become a Sōhei, a warrior monk. In 1180, during the Battle of Mii-dera, I was found near death by a vampire and turned.

Tatsu: Konnichiwa, hello. My name is Tatsu Kurosaki Cobb. I was born in Japan in 2000 (the Year of Tatsu), the oldest son of a Japanese mother and an American father. When I was ten, I moved to New Mexico to live with my uncle after my family was slaughtered by a vampire. I did not remember their deaths. My grandfather also lived with me, and we continued my studies of swordsmanship until he passed away while I was in college. When my memories of the night my family was slaughtered returned, I became driven by fukushū, revenge, and the need to know the reason why they died.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

Arisada: Meeting Tatsu was rather complicated. I fell in love with him in 1172 when he was a youth named Koji Nowaki. After I became a vampire, I searched for Nowaki’s reincarnated spirit for eight-hundred years. I had vowed to kill Nowaki for betraying Mii-dera and me. When I saw him reincarnated as Tatsu Cobb, I realized I still loved him in his new form. However, I was oath-bound to slay Tatsu for revenge for my slain Sōhei brethren. But before I killed him, I wanted him in my bed just once.

Tatsu: Arisada saved my ass in a dark alley one night when another vampire jumped me from behind. Then he kissed me and disappeared. That kiss was so incredibly hot I felt it clear down to my toes and in a lot of other regions. It felt so familiar that it drove me nuts—until I discovered who and what he was.

If it wasn’t love at first sight, what changed?

Tatsu: No it wasn’t love at first sight for me, but it sure as hell was lust. Then the more I saw Arisada, the more I realized he embodied bushi damashi, the true spirit of a samurai. This forced me to accept he was not a vicious animal. He wants a world where everyone lives in peace. Then his avowals of love for me began to get to me. Not to mention he is hot!

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

Tatsu: Well, Arisada is—

Arisada: Please, be quiet Tatsu. I shall answer this first. After all, I am older. The most frustrating quality about Tatsu is his stubbornness. He is still young and naïve, and tends to jump into fights to save others without thought. I had to rescue more than once. Plus, he refused to accept that vampires are capable of love.

Tatsu: Okay, Arisada, you’ve had your say. There are times Arisada despises who he is. His nature as a vampire goes against the tenants of his Buddhist faith. He needs human blood to survive yet he grieves each time he causes the death of an innocent. That conflict is the source of so much of his self-loathing.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

Arisada: I wish to speak about Tatsu and allow him to speak about me. He is unbelievably brave and embodies all the qualities of a true samurai. He dedicated himself to redeeming his family’s name knowing it may cost him his life. He is also utterly adorable and the sexiest man on two legs I have ever met.

Tatsu: Okay, now you are embarrassing me. We were both raised as samurai warriors—

Arisada: And samurai never speak of their emotions? Silly boy, you know better.

Tatsu: Arisada believes everyone can be redeemed no matter how evil they are. Also, he loves humans for their effort to save beautiful things, like KubotoPark, in the midst of all this chaos and death.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

Arisada: True harmony between vampires and humans.

Tatsu: That Arisada and I could always be together, which is not possible since his lifespan as a vampire is so much longer than mine.

About the Author

Tell us a little about yourself!

I was born in England, moved with my family to several countries before landing in the United States. I obtained a Bachelor’s in English and one in Secondary Education although I taught only briefly. My first passion is horses, and I raised and trained them for the show ring. I am single now but have children and grandchildren, all of whom know about my book.

After twenty-five years as a writer and editor for several national magazines, I felt I was totally burned out and retired. I was determined never to put another word down on paper, e-mails notwithstanding. That lasted all of three months.

One night at 2 a.m., I surfed onto the Sci-Fi channel and saw an anime that showed two men kissing. (I could not believe at my age, I’d never heard of much less seen a yaoi anime.) It was scorching! I was hooked and bought as many yaoi manga and anime as I could get my hands on. I love how they deal with some of the most complex and, in some cases, dark aspects of human nature yet still incorporate all the elements of romance. When I wrote my first fan fiction, I received many surprisingly positive and insightful reviews.

I began taking shinkendo classes and read The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu. I found the feudal Japanese culture to be incredibly fascinating, maybe more so because I am a Westerner. Later, I read the story about the Battle of Mii-dera and how the defeated monks committed seppuku. That historical event coupled with the idea of an story of eternal love led to my novel.
What makes your current offering a different and compelling read?

The theme is that souls who are truly in love will eventually find each other. Although Eternal Samurai is foremost M/M erotica, it is also an urban fantasy set in a dystopian world but with historical flashbacks. I avoided many of the tropes of vampire folklore—immortality, flying, religious inferences, death from wooden stakes, etc. Vampires must have blood to survive and it must be taken directly from a living human being. No blood-in-a-bag home delivery unless it is the pizza boy! Although faster and stronger than most humans, vampires will die if exposed to sunlight. The conflict between vampire and human is vicious and brutal, and is a major factor in the conflict between the two lovers. But never fear, there is plenty of romance, sex and more than a taste of BDSM.

What keeps you inspired?

I am inspired by the thought that there is a reader who will pick up my book and spend a night or two enjoy being immersed in love, passion, bloody battles and some really graphic sex. Well, that is part of my inspiration. I also love it when my characters take over and begin to act out their own story. I can’t wait to find out what they are going to do or say next. And I love language, how versatile it is. I love how words are so evocative and can bring worlds to life in such a manner that readers feel they are there.
How do you juggle writing and working outside the home? Or how do you juggle writing and your family life? Or writing, working, and family life?

As most of us, I’ve always had to juggle work, school, family, in addition to managing my horse farm and teaching youth to ride. I didn’t believe the time I suddenly had when I and my last two show horses retired three years ago. Well, semi-retired. I founded an editing and consulting business. The horses spend most of their time at pasture although we go for the occasional trail ride. I have always been involved in social advocacy so I volunteered for a GLBTQ youth organization and an equine rescue. Also, I took up shinkendo for recreation, which began my love affair with the Japanese culture. Then the writing bug hit.
What other book/series would you compare your current offering to?

That is a tough one. I would describe Eternal Samurai as cross-genre and am not sure what it compares with. There is so much in this the M/M supernatural genre I haven’t read yet. Instead, I’d love to discuss what influenced my work. (I hope it is okay to mention other books and authors here). I have been reading vampire, urban and paranormal fantasies for more than forty years. I love all things vampire.

My first exposure to supernatural M/M was Shadow Harvest by James Buchanan. One of his stories moved me so much that I sent the publisher a letter (talk about fandom!). First vampire book? Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Now, that’s a book rife with homoerotic suggestions. My first contemporary M/M vampire read was Jourdan Lane’s Bound by Blood series. Laura Baumbach’s Blood Claim was next. Hot! I read dozens more like it, some wonderful, some dull and formulaic.

Other influences include authors Marion Zimmer Bradley, Diana L. Paxson and Anne McCaffrey who created marvelous fantasies set in believable worlds. Worlds I’d love to live in. For real-life drama, I adore MZB’s The Catch Trap and Patricia Nell Warren’s The Front Runner. These benchmark novels attest to the fact that women can tell a sensitive yet powerful and emotional story from the POV of a gay man.

I devoured the Japanese novels Taiko by Eijo Yoshikawa and Cloud of Sparrows by Takashi Matsuoka (the English translation of course). Always looking for more like that.

However, my personal bravo goes to the manga/anime series Yami no Matsui by Yoki Matsushita, which was the magical wand that began my fiction writing. The dystopian world in Eternal Samurai was influenced by dozens of science-fiction novels but I feel it echoes the setting of the anime series Ai no Kusabi by Rieko Yoshihara. The use of the Japanese language and subsequent English meanings was influenced by the style of James Clavell’s Shogun. And I can’t resist a quick shout out to Buffy the Vampire Slayer for its sheer quirky, campy, bite-me enjoyment.

Elements of successful and popular M/M erotica stories showed me what worked. I am grateful for the success of so many of these books, especially those written by women. Finally, when I made the commitment to write a novel, I poured over Josh Lanyon’s Man Oh Man, Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Cash. Thank you Josh.

What is the most rewarding aspect of writing and/or publishing? The most terrifying/frustrating?

With writing, it is those rare moments when my Muse takes over. I am in an altered state, and the words just flow unimpeded from brain to keyboard. I usually emerge wondering where it all came from—but delighted with the results. Doesn’t happen very often. Mostly, writing is hard work but I am committed to creating something every day even if it isn’t what I can use.

As for publishing, the most rewarding is when a reader tells me they enjoyed my book. Not a rave review—although they’re incredibly affirming—but when someone lets me know my characters came to life, that the reader felt their emotions and couldn’t wait to find out what happens to them.

The most frustrating was almost getting accepted by three different traditional publishers. I said almost. Those high hopes were followed by some awful, I-have-no-business-writing-fiction lows. I received constructive feedback from two publishers that pointed out how my book does not fit the traditional M/M romance formula. However, the long periods between submittal and rejection showed me I did not have the luxury of time to wait for an acceptance by a publisher (I’m on the gracious side of middle age).

The most terrifying aspect is once I publish the book, it is no longer mine. It is now subject to others’ opinions.
What’s next for you?

Book Two. Although my books are not a series in the classical sense, the second novel Eternal Warrior, takes place in the same world. It is the love story between two men introduced in Eternal Samurai. I also have written a coming-out play in conjunction with a group that plans to stage our works for the GLBTQ community this summer.

I have several short M/M erotica stories for an anthology but want to include other writers. Still figuring out how to reach other authors who may wish to contribute. ***laughs*** My social-networking learning curve is barely above flatline.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you, your books, or writing?

Oh yes! There is a huge difference between writing non-fiction and fiction. During my career as a journalist, I won several press awards, none of which mean you-know-what in the fiction arena. Of course, fiction is more fun. But the most significant thing was I discovered that I am compelled to write fiction. The characters and stories demand to be told. I love the characters and dark world I have created, and plan on playing in it for as long as I am able.

What was your favorite thing about writing these characters?

Revealing the love between Arisada and Tatsu. These are not gentle characters; both are alpha males and oath-sworn enemies. I had to allow them to accept the love between them and yet not lose honor. Okay that might have been my favorite but the second was definitely the sex. Oh, I love writing the sex! Some readers may wonder how I, a bi-sexual woman—although I prefer the term genderqueer—could know what love and sex feels like for a gay man. But I have some amazing, loving, gay-male friends who not only shared with me how it feels to be in love, but were happy to demonstrate how it works. Or is that TMI?
What was the hardest part of writing this book?

Body counts. More dead guys at the end of a fight than live ones at the beginning. No, not really. The hardest thing is my compulsion to revise. A friend and fellow author says I suffer from OCED, obsessive compulsive editing disorder. Even after a professional editor proofed my book, I made revisions to the work. Later, when I corrected the errors in the first published edition, I still could not stop the compulsion to revise. I always feel my writing can improve, and I will never stop learning. It is the same with working with horses; you never stop learning about them.
What’s the coolest factoid that you discovered while doing research for this book?

One factoid that surprised me? Oh my gosh, where to start? Folklore about vampires in Japan did not exist until the late 1950s when Western vampire movies (based on classic 18th Century European folklore) introduced the mythology to Japan. Lucky for me and many of us, the Japanese have totally embraced the legend in so many creative ways including manga and anime.

What would your superpower be and why?

Oh to fly, no doubt. I have parasailed and flown a small aircraft and even bungee jumped (once in a moment of insanity) but it would be marvelous to soar through the clouds and view the entire panorama of the world below. Plus, with the cost of air fares these days, it would be handy since my family is scattered from England to New Zealand to South Africa.

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

Merrick: My name is Ged Merrick. I’m Captain of the Breaker-one-Niner. It’s a military class ship designed for deep space missions. And she’s fast, she is mighty fast when we need her to be.
Jessie: And sometimes we need her to be.
Merrick: Yeah, we don’t always work within the law.
Jessie: You can’t say it, can you? We’re pirates. We never work within the law.
Merrick: It’s a small crew, usually just ten men. It fluctuates. We work mostly in the Zeta Quadrant, but have been known to drift closer to the homelands from time to time. More lately, I guess, in the search for Jessie.
Jessie: You went back into homeland territory for me?
Merrick: Of course we did. I thought he might have been sold back to Rexalon for reconditioning. Oh, that’s our home planet. Where we were trained. Farmed really. They pay big money for runaways.
Jessie: I’m King Jesson. I used to be second in command on the Breaker but for the last six years—
Merrick: You don’t have to tell them about that Jessie.
Jessie: Sure I do. For the last six years I’ve been working as an erotic dancer all over Zeta and the surrounding quadrants. There was a … we got caught up in … some bad stuff and I was uh … captured. And sold. But that’s old news. Now I’m back with the Breaker.
What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?
Jessie: He’s stubborn, boneheaded and never thinks of himself.
Merrick: Uh, I was going to say the same about him.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

Jessie: He’s stubborn, boneheaded and never thinks of himself?
Merrick: Oi, cut it out. I said he was very bendy, didn’t I?

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

Merrick: I only had one wish, and that came true.
Jessie: He’s playing you. He wants a Helden 54 fighter platform with duel relay.
Merrick: You’re right I do. It’s the latest in military tech. Full cloaking, quantum generators and she can be remote piloted from five hundred clicks.
Jessie: I knew it. You bastard. I’ve only ever wanted Merrick.
Merrick: Except when you didn’t.
Jessie: Yeah, well. I was lying.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

Jessie: It was for me. Merrick didn’t know I existed for a long while.
Merrick: I did. I just didn’t want you to know I had a thing.
Jessie: You had a thing for me? That’s too sweet for you Merrick, you didn’t have a thing.
Merrick: I was a kid, of course I was sweet. And who didn’t have a thing for that stupidly bendy body of yours?
Jessie: And I thought it was my eyes, and my charm that got you. We met in training. On Rexalon. Pair of kids being forced to make hard decisions. He blew my world. All that anger and compassion bleeding through his skin. Hot as hell. And I should know—I’ve been there. It was a precise military operation to get his attention.
Merrick: Don’t be daft.
Jessie: Took a lot of effort to hook him, but once I did—
Merrick: I basically didn’t stand a chance.

Casey, tell us a bit about yourself! From your back catalog, do you have a secret favorite? If so which book and why?

Ooh, that’s a difficult one. It’s got to be The Rise of Alec Caldwell series. I’m addicted to the characters’ lives and Alec never shuts up, he’s always up to something in my head and the muse is crazy about him. I can’t ever imagine a time when I won’t be writing about Alec and his adventures, even though the published version will end with Volume Four.

What is the most rewarding aspect of writing and/or publishing? The most terrifying/frustrating?

The best part is when a reader really gets the characters. I’m amazed at some of the reviews and emails I’ve had. It feels good to share a little bit of love and inspiration and to brighten someone’s world for just one day.
The most terrifying is the same with any creative venture, sharing a story is like sharing a little piece of yourself. That and the fact you always think people are going to hate it, and of course, sometimes they do.

What’s next for you?

Finding King is the first in a trilogy, so the next installment is on the drawing board. I have Alec Volume Four in progress and a couple of new WIP’s, a novel length paranormal fantasy, a psychological thriller and a couple of contemporary novella’s. I am also working on a sequel for Be My Boy.

Welcome Kristi and Cam. Can you tell us a little about yourselves?

KRISTI: I’m Kristi Cross and this is Cam Jackson.

CAM: I’m a computer programmer—

K: A computer genius.

C: You just say that because you have yet to figure out how to work Facebook.

K: Shut up.

C: Seriously. I have to stop by her store once a week or so just to unscramble everything she’s enabled on her phone.

K: I’m technologically challenged. So sue me.

What kind of store do you have?

K: A book and coffee.

C: She loves books.

K: And coffee.

C: And the coffee grinder is the old fashioned kind.

K: Because, did I mention? Technologically challenged?

C: Best coffee in Seattle, though. And that’s saying a lot.

Seattle? Have you always lived there?

C: Oh yeah. We both went to the University of Washington.

K: Loved it.

Was that how you met?

C: Yep. There was a group of us living on the 7th floor of McCarty Hall.

K: Called ourselves the “Dawgs.”

C: We’re still friends with our dorm-mates. We all share a vacation house on Tryst Island.

THEY SHARE A STEAMY GLANCE.

Tryst Island? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of it.

C: It’s our nickname for it.

K: Short for Trystacomseh Island. It’s in the San Juans.

rocksunset

Oh, it’s beautiful there.

C: It is.

THE GLANCE HEATS UP EVEN MORE.

Ahem. So. Was it love at first sight?

KRISTI LAUGHS. Probably.

CAM QUIRKS A BROW. Only probably?

K: We met during the playoffs…I doubt he even noticed I was a female.

CAM, UNDER HIS BREATH: Oh, I noticed.

The…playoffs?

C: Our group gathered every weekend in the Fall in the lounge on our floor to watch football.

K: Mostly yell at the screen.

C: Only when the Dawgs were losing. Anyway, one Saturday, I turned around and there she was. HE CHUCKLES. Wearing her pajamas.

KRISTI WRINKLES HER NOSE. It was a nightshirt. The only thing I had with a Husky logo.

C: She was adorable.

KRISTI SMACKS HIM ON THE SHOULDER. Why didn’t you make a move then?

C: Hello. You had a boyfriend.

KRISTI GLOWERS AT THE INTERVIEWER. We wasted so much time. We both had crushes on each other.

C: And you had a boyfriend.

SHE SNORTS. You had a girlfriend. Always. Anyway, we both had these ridiculous crushes.

C: And both pretended we were just friends.

What changed?

K: We played a game of Hearts.

A game of Hearts?

CAM GRINS. Tell her what we played for.

KRISTI BLUSHES. You tell her. It was your idea.

C: A kiss. It was genius on my part, really. See, if she lost, she had to kiss me. If I lost, I had to kiss her.

K: He lost.

CAM WAGGLES A BROW. Either way, I won. Like I said. Genius.

KRISTI NODS. I did mention he was a genius.

C: An evil genius. And you liked the kiss.

SHE BLUSHES. I did.

SO Kristi, what is your worst quality?

KRISTI MAKES A FACE: I wish I was skinnier.

C: What? Are you crazy? You’re perfect. HE TUGS HER CLOSER AND NIBBLES ON HER NECK.

K: I should lose weight. Maybe I should go on a diet.

CAM’S EXPRESSION DARKENS. Don’t even joke about it. I love everything about you. Just as you are.

A MISCHEVIOUS EXPRESSION FLITS OVER KRISTI’S FACE. Everything?

C: Everything.

K: Even my…frisky side?

C: Especially that.

K: Then when are you going to let me try that…thing Holt mentioned?

A TELLING FLUSH CREEPS UP CAM’S NECK. I have no idea what you’re talking about.

K: Don’t you? SHE LEANS OVER AND WHISPERS SOMETHING IN HIS EAR. HIS FACE GOES BEET RED.

CAM, TO THE INTERVIEWER: Can we change the subject?

This seems interesting…

CAM: Please?

HE IS JUST TOO ADORABLE WHEN HE BEGS, SO THE INTERVIEWER RELENTS.  Alright. Kristi, what is Cam’s worst quality?

KRISTI LAUGHS. Other than the fact that he cheats at Hearts?

CAM PUTS OUT A LIP. Only to lose. Only for a kiss.

KRISTI CUPS HIS CHEEK. I was kidding, darling. I love that you tricked me into kissing you. And I loved everything that happened after that. Mostly, I love that we found each other.

HE GAZES INTO HER EYES. Me too.

So, if you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

KRISTI (STILL MOONING AT CAM): It already has.

C: Undoubtedly.

KRISTI SIGHS. But honestly? If I could have one other wish come true, I would wish my sister Bella could find what we’ve found.

CAM WRAPS HIS ARM AROUND HER SHOULDER. She will. When the time is right. You’ll see.

K: I hope so. She deserves…this.

CAM KISSES KRISTI.  FOR A LONG TIME. WHEN HE FINALLY PULLS AWAY, HE MURMURS SOFTLY, Everyone deserves this. Everyone.

Welcome Sabrina! Tell us a little about yourself!
I am excited to announce that I am celebrating my one year anniversary as a published author. In this year I’ve sold more than fifteen titles and garnered some pretty awesome reviews.  It’s been an exciting journey.

I wanted to do something special to celebrate, and I decided a self published series was a great way to do that. I wrote Rebound, the first book in my new Tryst Island Series, and enrolled it in Amazon’s Kindle Prime program, because I wanted to be able to give it away for free once in a while. My next free days will be sometime the first week in May to celebrate my first visit to the RT convention!

What makes your current offering a different and compelling read?
The cool thing about the Tryst Island Series is that it’s about a group of friends. So you meet the same characters over and over again. I worked very hard to make these characters people you would want to hang out with. They’re funny and smart and sexy—and undyingly loyal to each other.

It must have worked. People are already clamoring for Bella’s story. I’ve been scolded for not writing faster.

What keeps you inspired?

For this series? Yeah. Just look at the photo.

What is the most rewarding aspect of writing and/or publishing? The most terrifying/frustrating?

The most rewarding aspect is hearing from readers who love my books. Oh, that never gets old. And the authors I have met? What a wonderful group of ladies. It’s pretty amazing when someone you worship loves your books too! Best selling erotic author Desiree Holt had this to say about Rebound: “You can’t go wrong with a Sabrina York story. You’ll want to take the hero home with you and keep him forever. And the sex? More than you ever dreamed. Get this book today.”

I know! Right?

*Fans self*

Self publishing was pretty terrifying. Because I had to edit the book, format it and upload it. Fortunately I had a great team to support me.

And wouldn’t you know? Now that I have it all figured out, it’s not scary at all!

What’s next for you?
Dragonfly Kisses (Cassie and Dylan’s Story) is Book 2, and Bella and Holt’s story is the third. And did I mention, there are ten stories in the series? Strap in. It’s gunna be a wild ride.

Rebound by Sabrina York

A Tryst Island Erotic Romance

Kristi Cross has had the hots for her friend, Cameron Jackson as long as she can remember, but she knows she’s not his type. She’s nothing like the women he dates. So when he suggests they play for a kiss over a game of Hearts, Kristi can’t resist. Even if she loses, she wins. Because she’s finally going to taste him.

Of course, one kiss can quickly become something altogether steamier, especially when both parties are on the rebound…

Fall in Love on Tryst Island

When a group of friends share a vacation house, wild hijinks, unexpected hook-ups and steamy sex ensue. And true love. Did I mention they all find true love?  Visit www.sabrinayork.com for more details.

Goodreads Rating System – Stars In Confusion

April 8, 2013 by Leta

So, I made a post last week about some things I don’t get, some more controversial than others. Today I’m going to post about something I think every author and reader can agree on “not getting”.   The Goodreads rating system.

For example, in what world does two stars equal “it was okay”? Do you look at a two star rating on a book and think the person liked the book? Heck no. You think, “Wow, they didn’t like this book, but it wasn’t the worst thing they’ve ever read in their life either.” But apparently in Goodreads world, two stars means “it was okay”. I don’t understand.

five-star-rating
This rating system makes sense to me.

In my mental star system (where Jean-Luc Picard reigns in naked glory like the time when the Borg kidnapped him), it works more like this:

One star = Loathed this book and think it sucks like a massive black star of suck.

Two stars = This book was pretty bad, but I’ve read worse.

Three stars = The book was incredibly mediocre but the author could spell and use commas, even though it was dull and I almost didn’t finish it.

Four stars = Yay, I liked it!

Five stars = Yay, I liked it a hell of a lot!

So, here’s my question–when you rate at Goodreads do you use their star system or your own mental star system? And does your star system more closely resemble mine or Goodreads’?

Also, what about rounding up? If you feel like the book was really 1.5 stars, do you give it the benefit of the doubt and round it up? Or do you stick it with the lower number because you’d hate to mislead people?

Another thing I’ve noticed about Goodreads–some people give stars based only only literary merit and not how much they enjoyed the book. I got a few emails from a friend proclaiming that she was crazy about a book featuring gay football players in love, couldn’t stop thinking about it, spent the whole day at work wishing she was home and could read the book. When it was over I got a text reporting that she was sad the book was done and the ending had been just what she wanted. Yet, on Goodreads, she gave the book only three stars. When I asked her why, she said, that it was a great read and she’d loved it a lot, but it was no Deathless or Fortress of Solitude.

This was fascinating to me because I always like to give stars based on the books effectiveness in its genre. If it’s erotica, did it engage me and get me titillated? If it’s romance, did I fall in love too? If it’s literature, was I impressed by the words and the craftsmanship? If it’s fantasy, how was the world building? If it’s self-help, was it actually, you know, helpful? If it’s a children’s book, will actual small children enjoy it? If it’s a spy novel, was it exciting and did I guess the end before it was over? If it was historical fiction, was it well researched?

I couldn't resist.
I couldn’t resist.

It had seemed to me, from the outside in, that the gay football players in love novel had been a total five stars for her in terms of it being a book that did what it was written to do. But she rated on how it worked as literature, not how she reacted to the book in the context of what it was designed for. And that’s her prerogative and one of the things that makes Goodreads a confusing mire when it comes to interpreting the ratings given to a book.

What are your thoughts on the Goodreads rating system? How do you use it?

ETA: I wrote this post a month ago or more, and I honestly have no idea what Jean Luc Picard has to do with any of it. Just…you know…go with it.

Writer Wednesday: Berengaria Brown and Combustion

April 3, 2013 by Leta

Today we’re interviewing Berengaria Brown’s main characters from her book Combustion.

 ***

combustion_msr

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

Hi. My name’s Xonra Gibson and I’m Vice President of Advertising for an HR company called HR Resources Ltd. I attended the memorial service for one-hundred-one-year-old MaryAnne Menzies, a family friend, and was embarrassed to be attracted to the broad-shouldered hunk squeezed into the chair next to me at the overcrowded event, Glenn Hilton. Glen is partnered to the equally yummy Morgan McLean.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

It was definitely lust at first sight for all of us. I was trying to focus on the service for MaryAnne but couldn’t keep my eyes off Glenn.

Hi, I’m Morgan. Glenn and I followed Xonra back to her car. Not only did we want to spend more time with her, but also, she’d said the car wasn’t fully inside the parking space and we’d had our car wheel-clamped at the same funeral chapel only a month or two earlier so we knew her car would be in trouble. And it was. I almost died of embarrassment when she insisted on phoning my sister to check that we weren’t a couple of slave traders or ax murderers, though. It just proves what a strong and feisty partner she is.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

Hi, I’m Glenn. It wasn’t easy to convince Xonra to come away with us for a weekend to get to know each other better. And even then she’s busy scenting a mystery and trying to solve it instead of thinking only about us. But I wouldn’t have her any other way. Morgan and I love that she has brains as well as a body that calls to us.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

Morgan again. I think the fact she was so determined to discover what was happening at Berisford Village only made us love her more. She wanted to help those people and it showed her tender, human side, a side I plan to find out a lot more about in the future.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

The men have already made my wish come true, that we’ll have our own happy ever after. But I want that for the people of Berisford Village as well.

***

And now we’ll speak to Berengaria!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Berengaria is a multi-published author of erotic romance: contemporary, paranormal (magic, ghosts, vampires, fairies, dragons, and werewolves), futuristic, medieval, and Regency-set historical. She loves to read all different kinds of romance so that is what she writes: one man/one woman; two women; two men; two men/one woman; three men, two women/one man, three men/one woman…. Whatever the characters need for their very hot happily-ever-after, Berengaria makes sure they get it.

What makes your current offering a different and compelling read?

For such a short book, (19,000 words) there’s a lot happening. Apart from the funeral, there’s a hot and sultry ménage romance story, and the vacation mystery as well.

What’s next for you?

I’ve just contracted a new book with Ellora’s Cave, called “Four-Way Split”. We haven’t done edits yet, but I’m hoping they won’t be too far in the future.

Writer Wednesday: Kate Davies and Most Likely To Succeed

March 20, 2013 by Leta

Most Likely Succeed Cover

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

Kelsey: My name’s Kelsey Moore, and I’m…kind of floundering right now, to be honest. Back in high school I was really driven – they even voted me Most Likely To Succeed. But when my dad bailed on the family and our flower shop was about to go under, I turned down my scholarship and stayed to help out. Ten years later, and I’m still there, no college, no job mobility, and certainly no success. Is it any wonder I want to avoid the reunion if at all possible?

Nathan: I’m Nathan Barrow, and I haven’t been back in my hometown since graduation. I’ve been working all over the world as a water systems designer for an international relief organization. My ten year high school reunion seemed like a good opportunity to get back in touch with the people I knew back then, especially my lab partner, Kelsey. I’ve always wondered what happened to her, and can’t wait to catch up.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

Kelsey: I’ve had a crush on Nathan since, oh, forever. But nothing ever came of it, mostly because he was just so focused on his studies. I was, too, of course, but that didn’t keep me from checking him out.

Nathan: Love at first sight? Um, no. We were just buddies, lab partners. Kelsey was my closest friend. It wasn’t until I saw her at the reunion that my feeling started to change.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

Kelsey: I’m kind of an Eeyore, always focusing on the negative side of things. I should be more positive. As for Nathan, he has this irritating habit of trying to fix things.

Nathan: I’m not the most observant person, at least when it comes to interpersonal skills. I get caught up in whatever I’m working on and tend to miss the nuances. Kelsey is way too hard on herself. She doesn’t see how amazing she is.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

Kelsey: I’m fiercely loyal. Nathan is smart, driven, and an all around good guy. I mean, really? He could be making tons of money in the private sector, but he’s working for a relief organization instead.

Nathan: I’m pretty supportive of people. Whatever makes them happy and fulfilled, I’m in favor of it. And Kelsey? She’s one of the brightest, most fascinating people I’ve ever met. I love watching her mind work.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

Kelsey: I’d love to be the person that Nathan sees me as.

Nathan: I wish Kelsey and I could find a way to work together again, both personally and professionally. We worked as lab partners – I know we could work as partners in every sense of the world.

***

What makes your current offering a different and compelling read?

To me, what sets The Girls Most Likely To… apart from everything else I’ve written is the way they intertwine. Most trilogies follow one after the other, where the second book picks up sometime after the first book ends. In this series, all three novellas are set over the same weekend, so the three couples interact throughout all three books. (So a couple interacting at the bar in one book will be observed by another couple in the second book, and the third couple will hear about it later!) It was challenging to find ways to intertwine the storylines without being repetitious – and all the books had to stand on their own, as well. But I love the way they turned out!

How do you juggle writing and working outside the home? Or how do you juggle writing and your family life? Or writing, working, and family life?

Ummm…lack of sleep? 🙂 It’s definitely a challenge. I’ve got a very active family, a full time job, and the writing. I find that I work better when I have deadlines, because otherwise, it’s too easy for writing time to fall to the wayside. I’ve also gotten very adept at writing in the car, whether as a passenger or while waiting in the parking lot for practice to be over.

What’s next for you?

Well, books two and three are coming out in April and May, so readers can find out what happens to Bree and Marc, and Tess and Nathan. After that, I’m finishing up a rodeo novella for submission, and deciding which of my other projects I want to tackle next.

Lastly, provide me with covers, blurbs, buy links, and where you can be found on the web! 🙂

Book one in The Girls Most Likely to…

Ten years after being voted Most Likely to Succeed, Kelsey Moore is still living in her hometown, still working in her family’s flower shop, and too embarrassed to attend her high school reunion. Only the chance to reconnect with her study buddy—and secret crush—Nathan Barrow tempts her to go.

Nathan isn’t sure why he came back for the reunion after spending the past decade working abroad. But when he runs into his former lab partner, Kelsey, he’s sure glad he did. The chemistry between them is as potent as ever, and when she offers him a weekend of wild, no-strings-attached sex, Nathan knows he’d be a fool to say no.

Nathan can’t be tied to one place for long. But the more time they spend together—in and out of bed—the more Kelsey wonders if their reunion could become something more permanent. That is, if Nathan is still interested when he finds out she’s been less than honest with him about her life since graduation…

Writer Wednesday: Misa Buckley On a Thursday

We had a bit of a mix up, so here is Writer Wednesday on a Thursday, featuring Misa Buckley’s new book, Tin Cat! Let’s interview her main characters and see what this book’s about.

Tin Cat_500x750

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

A: Amber Gerald, comic store owner. A year ago I was hit by a taxi cab and broke my back. Now I’m in a wheelchair, but that hasn’t changed who I am.

H: Hunter Gray, though Amber calls me Gray.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

H: I was in pursuit of a dangerous criminal, part of paying a debt to society. My investigations led me to Amber’s shop and yes, it was.

A: What Gray said, though I think it was more lust at first sight than love.

H: I beg to differ.

A: You would. I think what changed for me was realising that Gray really cared for me. A lot of guys don’t look past the chair, but he did.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

H: I don’t have any bad qualities.

A: *giggles* Yeah, right! He’s stubborn, irretractable, impossible – I swear, the list doesn’t end.

H: While she is overly talkative and terrible with secrets, obviously.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

A: Being talkative *laughs* Hey, it’s true enough for someone running any kind of store and I’ve always loved chatting to people, especially when we’re chatting about anything sci fi.

H: She is very good with people. Mine is not giving up at winning her over.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

H: There are days I wish Amber could walk, not because she’s incapable, but I hate that an idiot stole that part of her life. I don’t think she’s wish that for herself, though.

A: Any more than you’d wish your past changed. There’s nothing more I want than Gray, and I have him. *looks a little smug*

Tell us a little about yourself!

I grew up watching Doctor Who and Star Trek, and reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so it’s probably not that surprising that when I started writing NaNoWriMo in 2007, it was sci fi that I chose to write. I find writing a much-needed haven from the crazy of raising five children and a Land Rover-obsessed husband.

I can be found on Twitter (@MisaBuckley) or at her website (www.misabuckley.com)

What was the hardest part of writing this book?

I had to do a lot of research into spinal injuries and the results, as well as listening to many people living with a similar level of disability to Amber’s. There’s still a lot of misunderstanding and even discrimination suffered by disabled people, and that was hard to stomach. However, it made me more determined to present TIN CAT as a story about a woman who just happens to be in a wheelchair, rather than one centred on that disability.

What’s next for you?

BAYNE releases May 6th.

Malia dreams of a life less ordinary but when her planet is visited by the Bayne, Destroyer of Worlds, she surrenders herself to him in order to give her people time to collect the tribute that the Overlord demands.

Despite Bayne being as much machine as man and having a violent temper, he rescues her from the unwanted attentions of his second-in-command and gives Malia a glimpse at the battered heart lying beneath the steel and scars.

As they start their relationship over, Malia discovers a man very different to the reputation that precedes him and probes deeper. However, her investigation uncovers a dark truth: a truth that someone wants to remain hidden no matter what the cost.

 ***

TIN CAT ~ A year after the accident that put her in a wheelchair, Amber Gerald has more or less gotten used to living with her impairment. It doesn’t make a difference to running a comic book store anyway, and the customers have been the best support group she could have wished for.

When she rescues an abandoned cat, Amber has no idea that she’s interfering in the mad scheme of a time travelling bank robber. Or that the man that walks into her store dressed like Blade is about to become her bodyguard.

Between being an unwitting owner of an android cat and falling for a cybernetic bounty hunter, Amber finds her life a whole new level of weird as science fiction becomes a very real factual threat.

I’ll be at Rainbow Con in April of 2014. I believe they still have reader (and possibly author) slots available. I’m excited and look forward to meeting folks there!

In other news, Skylar M. Cates’ book, Exposed, is out and available now. I was lucky enough to be involved in some editing of this book, and I’m excited that it is out in the world. Here’s an link to a  gushing review left by someone other than me over at Goodreads. 🙂

Rabble — Thoughts and Kickstarter

February 28, 2013 by Leta

Apparently, this is some game app, but I thought it fit this post rather nicely.
Apparently, this is some game app, but I thought it fit this post rather nicely.

Rabble is being touted as publishing’s potential answer to The Trouble With Finding Books Online (Forbes). Some are describing it as “Rotten Tomatoes for books.” It is apparently going to be the first site of its kind to try to put self-published books on the same level playing field as traditionally published books.

After reading the Forbes article, I was pretty interested in the concept and even went to Rabble’s Kickstarter page to find out more about it. They’d raised $510 toward their goal of $10,000 in the less-than-one-day the kickstarter had been live.

I admit this surprised me. I mean, compare that to the recent HONY efforts to raise money for kids for camp. He’s got $60,000 now, but at a similar stage in the game as Rabble’s attempt, he had over $10,000 raised. Is the difference that one is for charity and everyone has a dog in that? And the Rabble Kickstarter is for an untried website where only some people (readers, authors) might have a dog in it? Probably. That would probably explain a lot. And I’m also not sure where this Rabble Kickstarter is being marketed. I only read about it because a friend sent that Forbes article to me in a general interest sort of way.

But, I don’t think that’s all that’s going on here. HONY is a very life affirming organization and their reason for their Kickstarter was inspiring. He’d had DNKY in Bangkok steal what amounts to about $100,000 worth of his photos. And instead of suing them, or wasting his time on that, this is what he had to say:

I feel like the luckiest guy in the world right now. I do what I love every day. No amount of money would be worth taking my mind off that. Not for a month. Not for a week. Not for a day.

In ten years, I don’t want to look back on this week as some sort of missed opportunity. I’d rather remember it as that time we took something negative and used it as an excuse to send a bunch of kids to summer camp– who otherwise would not have had the resources to go.

We’ve raised almost $10,000 in just a few hours, which is great. We may need a few heroes to reach our $75,000 goal, but either way we are going to make a huge impact, and I’m thrilled about that.

That’s inspiring and makes me want to give him and his cause some money.

Which brings me back to Rabble, when I clicked on the Kickstarter page for Rabble, I was immediately disappointed. Not in how little money they’d raised, but in the aggressive and hostile tone they took in the headline: Death to the Sockpuppets.

I think we can all agree that sockpuppetry in reviews exists and that it sometimes gets out of hand. But when I read about Rabble in the Forbes article, I wasn’t thinking about sockpuppets. I was thinking, “Wow, this could be huge. It would be amazing to see this built. It will be fascinating to see them aggregate reviews in a helpful way and to put self-pub and traditional on the same level.”

But when I clicked, instead of seeing anything inspiring like, “Let’s fix reviews together! Let’s build something amazing!” Instead, I got a faceful of anger. I immediately no longer felt like donating.

Call me strange, but I just don’t think anger sells. Or it doesn’t sell for me, anyway. Not when it comes to this kind of thing.

I closed the page and didn’t donate. I still haven’t. Even though I still think that if Rabble is more like the Forbes article descrption, then I want it to exist. Strange how easily we are turned off by things, isn’t it?

darkfancy_msrWelcome. Please Introduce yourselves.

JAMES TULLY, EARL OF DARLINGTON NODS. A GOLD-TINGED CURL FLOPS ONTO HIS BROW. I’m James.

THE PETITE BLONDE AT HIS SIDE SMILES AND PATS HIS HAND. And I’m Helena Simpson.

JAMES FROWNS. Helena Simpson…Tully.

SHE GIGGLES. I keep forgetting.

Although I still think of you as Eloise, darling. THEY GAZE INTO EACH OTHER’S EYES UNTIL THE INTERVIEWER BECOMES A LITTLE UNCOMFORTABLE.

Ahem. Can you tell us a little about yourselves?

ROUSED FROM HIS REVERIE, JAMES BLINKS. Certainly. While I’m a peer of the realm, I spend a lot of time in the stables. Love a good line.

He has the finest stables in Christendom. HELENA SMILES IMPISHLY. And the most beautiful gardens.

AGAIN WITH THE MOONING.

Soooo…How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

JAMES CHUCKLES. It was definitely lust at first sight.

HELENA WRINKLES HER NOSE. First sight? I looked a mess! You see, I’d run away from home and I was hiding in his gardener’s shed. I was wet, bedraggled—

And there was a hank of beef hanging out of her mouth. THIS, JAMES CROWS. It was adorable.

HELENA HUMPHS. I was hungry. A GRUMBLE.

Why were you running away?

Oh! HELENA ROLLS HER EYES. My guardian was forcing me into a marriage with a hideous Lord.

JAMES FROWNS AND MUTTERS UNDER HIS BREATH, Not so hideous.

Hideous! I saw him in Brighton several summers ago. He was fat and bug-eyed and had lips like a landed trout. SHE SHUDDERS. At any rate, I had to run away. And that’s how I met James. My romantic gardener.

You’re a…gardener?

JAMES COLORS. I might have pretended to be a gardener.

Why on earth would a Lord of the Realm pretend to be a gardener?

JAMES AND HELENA EXCHANGE A GLANCE, BUT DON’T ANSWER. THEIR KNOWING SMILES TELL THE TALE, THOUGH.

All right. Let’s move on. James, what is your most frustrating quality?

HELENA ANSWERS. He’s stubborn.

I most certainly am not stubborn. THIS HE SAYS WITH A STUBBORN TILT TO HIS SQUARE CHIN.

You are supremely stubborn. And demanding. And occasionally arrogant. And…dominating. FOR SOME REASON, HER VOICE SOFTENS ON THIS LAST WORD. AS DOES HER EXPRESSION. A DELICATE BLUSH RISES ON HER CHEEKS.

JAMES SNORTS. Hardly arrogant. But let’s talk about your most frustrating quality, darling.

Oh. Let’s. SHE SOUNDS DELIGHTED TO DO SO.

Okay. What is Helena’s most frustrating quality?

It’s not a quality, so much as a habit.

HELENA SNIFFS. I have no habits.

You clap your hands.

SHE BOGGLES. I clap my hands? That’s my most frustrating quality?

JAMES TURNS TO THE INTERVIEWER WITH A DARK LOOK. She claps her hands. It makes her look like a little girl. Do you know how…off-putting that can be? When a man’s in a…certain mood?

Hmm. I can only imagine.

Some men are always in a certain mood. THIS, HELENA OFFERS IN AN ASIDE.

JAMES ADJUSTS HIS CRAVAT. I’ve never heard a complaint about that.

AGAIN, THEIR EYES MEET. WICKED SMILES BLOSSOM.

So.

THE INTERVIEWER MUST INTERJECT.

What is her best quality then?

JAMES GAZES AT HELENA FOR A LONG LONG WHILE BEFORE HE RESPONDS. Everything.

Everything?

Everything. Her face, her voice, certainly her body.

HELENA WRINKLES HER NOSE. I’m tiny.

I love that you’re tiny. I love everything about you, darling.

And I love you.

A QUICK KISS. THEN A LONG ONE. YEAH. A REALLY LONG ONE. THE INTERVIEWER GLANCES AT HER WATCH.

So Helena, what is your favorite thing about James?

SHE DOES NOT HESITATE. His palm. A WHISPER.

WHILE THE INTERVIEWER IS PERPLEXED BY THIS ANSWER, JAMES SEEMS TO UNDERSTAND COMPLETLEY. A DEFINITIVE FIRE BLAZES IN HIS EYE AND HE SHIFTS, AS THOUGH HIS POSITION HAS SUDDENLY BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE.

Hookay… Next question.

THE INTERVIEWER CONSULTS HER LIST.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

JAMES STANDS AND GRABS HELENA BY THE HAND. I wish this interview was over. My wife and I need to have…a chat.

HELENA GASPS. TREMBLES VISIBLY. Now, James?

Now, Helena. Right now.

HIS EXPRESSION IS ADAMANT, AND ARROGANT AND DOMINANT AS HELL. SHE DOES NOT DEMUR. WHAT WOMAN WOULD?

AND WHILE HE IS CLEARLY IN A HURRY TO WHISK HIS WIFE AWAY, HE TAKES THE TIME TO BOW OVER MY HAND AND THANK ME FOR THE LOVELY VISIT, AS A TRUE GENTLEMAN WOULD.

AND, AS THEY DISSAPEAR IN A FLURRY OF CRINOLINE AND LACE, I HAVE TO ADMIT…I’M A LITTLE JEALOUS OF HELENA.

Welcome Sabrina York, Your Royal Hotness. Tell us a little about yourself!
Hello all! Thanks for having me Leta! Well, I’m an award-winning erotic author and while I’ve only been around for a while—my first book came out last April—I’m delighted to report I now have a dozen titles available or coming soon. They range from novels to novellas to short stories—everything from contemporary erotic romance to BDSM to erotic horror.

Yeah. I know. Horror? That one took me by surprise, but writing happens that way sometimes. I can build the characters and the bones of the plot, but the story has its own ideas.

Of course, my passion is for romance so I focus on that. The steamier, the better. And because I am a snarky minx, you might chuckle once in a while.
From your back catalog, do you have a secret favorite? If so which book and why?
My absolute favorite—and I know we’re not supposed to have them!—is Folly. I cut my teeth reading Regency romances as a girl and so it was a real joy to try my hand. Folly was so much fun to write and I fell in love with the characters.

When I finished the manuscript, I was so into that world, James and Helena’s story just flowed right out. And when I finished that one…Edward and Violet came to visit. They nagged me for weeks to write their stories. If all goes well, there will be at least four books in this series and maybe more.

All thanks to Sabrina York’s Folly!

What’s the coolest factoid that you discovered while doing research for this book?
Funny you should ask. I’ve read so many historical romances in my life, I thought I knew everything there was to know about the Regency period. Well, as they say, that’s what you get for thinking!

When Folly went to final line edits the word came back: Silly rabbit, the Tantalus (the ubiquitous feature in every Regency I’ve ever read, where the Lord of the Manor keeps his liquor locked up so the servants cannot snitch it) wasn’t invented until much later.

Another blow to my sexy plots…apparently women didn’t wear pantaloons in the Regency period. Those came along during the much stricter Victorian era. I had to rewrite several key scenes on that revelation.

Trust me, it pays to know your History of Underwear. Especially if you’re writing erotic romance.

Well, I hope I’ve piqued your interest! Dark Fancy is available on Amazon  and at Ellora’s Cave and everywhere-books are sold.

GRL from a Socially Anxious Newbie Perspective

February 22, 2013 by Leta

I wanted to reblog Amelia’s post about this, found HERE, but WordPress made that look a jumble mess, so I’m going to post about it with a link instead. So, please read Amelia’s post before reading mine.

As an incredibly new author and one who didn’t necessarily know if she was going to even attempt to attend GRL (and still isn’t sure), I saw one comment that made a lot of sense to me. An author named Daniel (sorry, I’ve forgotten the last name!) suggested that if they’d wanted to give those 30 authors the readers requested a heads-up, they could have sent them all personal messages saying, “We’ve been alerted that readers very much want you at this con. This is the day and time registration opens, it’s first come, first serve, but we and your readers would really love to see you there!” I thought that was a decent comment on a possible solution to this situation.

From the outside looking in, the main problem seemed to be the communication of the changes. The newsletter was so poorly worded that it’s kind of amazing. The clarification was worded much, much better and it probably would have gone over better as an initial communication about the topic. It is kind of a shame that they didn’t release that the wording of the first was so…problematic. (Although, the bit in the clarification post about how important it is to keep the stress levels of the better known authors–who have most likely attended plenty of cons–at a low level is kind of hilariously off-putting, too. I mean, newbie authors are super busy people as well, probably holding down a day job still, running a family, and trying to write/market; not to mention they are also probably a whole lot more stressed about attending a con situation for the first time–much more stressed than a well-known author who has been to many.)

I think they knew quite well that a kerfuffle was going to come of it, otherwise their original newsletter probably wouldn’t have needed a multi-paragraph reminder that they are all volunteers and do this for the love of it and please, for the love of God, don’t crucify us.

I, for one, am not upset or angry. I feel like I’m watching it from a bird’s eye view because I didn’t have a dog in the fight, so to speak. From the outside looking in, they just really bungled the communication side of things, imho. This could have been avoided by seriously thinking through how to present this whole thing. I wonder if the person who penned the “must-have author” line spent the day in bed with covers over their heads yesterday, because I’m quite sure the hurt feelings that came out of that were something he/she never intended.

Anyway, it’s an interesting mess. I’m curious how it will play out. I haven’t decided if I will attempt to attend or not. It’s in driving distance for me which makes it appealing, but as a newbie author who is already a socially anxious person, this kerfuffle has made it look like a pretty scary thing to attempt. Maybe since I’m so stressed about it they could give me a pre-registration time and hold my hand through all the steps of the process? Just kidding.

***

After their clarification, which can be found here, I have to admit that while some logical part of me understands what they are attempting, I’m still not sure I agree with what they’ve chosen to do. Regardless, being a Libra with social anxiety issues, I very much want to give them the benefit of the doubt and be fair to them, but, like Amelia, my triggers were pushed hard here. Like her, there were tears. Not because I won’t be a special invited person, I already knew that, but because I was able to imagine the grueling, exhausting, emotional let-down of it all so clearly. Like her, I’m anxious about attending now. I had been moderately excited and now I just feel dread–and certainty that if I even try to register I won’t ‘make it’ because there are only 30 spots I qualify for anyway.

It’s pretty disappointing. I’m…at an emotional loss with it all. Though, as I said, I’m still waiting to see how it all shakes out.

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

J: I am Jakuta Dagbo, once a storm god in the West African pantheon known as the Orixás, now a tattoo artist at the Midnight Café. After what happened when I was on the human side of the Veil, I’m happy not to have the kind of responsibility I had back then, even if I can’t always let go of my protective nature.

G: My name is Gràinne Bairdie, and I’m a banshee, although now I’m wondering if that’s all I really am. It’s all I could remember—a cold, emotionless life—until recently. I want to feel, want to know if I could be more, even if it kills me to find out.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

J: I could tell a storm was coming, even before Gràinne walked in through the door looking for a tat. I just didn’t know the feeling had nothing to do with the weather.

G: Jakuta was just another piece in my puzzle of self-discovery, until he touched me…
If it wasn’t love at first sight, what changed?

J: You can’t go through what we did together without learning the heart of a person, and what I learned about her just made me want her more, and for forever.

G: I knew what I felt, what I wanted from Jakuta, but how was I to know whether it was real or not? Everything was so new to me.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

J: Ha! Where do I start? Lack of anger management is obviously my worst flaw, closely followed by impatience and a lack of empathy. Can I stop now? It’s getting a little depressing. As for Gràinne, her lack of trust in me—in what we have together—that’s frustrating as hell.
What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

G: I have no memory of my past, so it’s hard to tell what my best quality is. If I can get my memory back, maybe I can tell you later.  But Jakuta, oh, that’s easy. He’s protective, caring, ready to take on any- and everything for me.
If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?
J: I think we’d have the same wish—or similar anyway—that Gràinne get her memory and emotions back. Of course, I want her to stay with me too, let me help her through whatever that will bring, but I don’t think that will happen.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I write erotic romance and erotica under the names Anya Richards and Anya Delvay and offer editing services through my website Grammar Goggles. While those things keep me busy, I also have a part-time job as a law clerk too. As a transplant to the Frozen North, winter, more particularly the ice it brings on the ground, is my least favorite time of the year. Ice should be in a glass, with a nice shot of Appleton rum on it, not under my feet!

I have a wonderful husband, three children (who pretend I write religious tracts) a cat, Moe, and a dog, Sable, whose street name is Beansie, which suits her down to the ground. What little spare time I have is taken up with cooking, crafting, reading and, occasionally, sewing, although I don’t do as much of the latter now as I did when I was younger and wanted the latest fashions but didn’t want to spend the money to get them.

From your back catalogue, do you have a secret favorite? If so which book and why?

StoneHardPassion_msrI have to confess that, while I love Fleeing Fate, which is the first book in the Unveiled Seductions series, I really, really love the second book, Stone-Hard Passion. It was the first time I’d written a hero like Vidar or, for that matter, a heroine like Jasmina. As the book unfolded I just became more and more invested in them and their happiness, wanting, so very badly, to make it come out right for them in the end, despite all the obstacles. The reality is, if I can’t feel my characters as I write, if I don’t like them, that book doesn’t get finished, so being invested in the people I create isn’t new. What was new with these two was just how real they became to me, and how much I craved their HEA.

What’s next for you?

someonehadtodoit_msrWell, I just got an acceptance for the third book in the Unveiled Seductions series, Dragon’s Claim, and I’m working on the fourth book, which has the working title Jaguar in the Sun. I’m also very excited to be a part of a humorous erotic anthology, Fondled and Gobbled. The first book, Someone Had To Do It, was released on February 6th, and the second, Going Back for Seconds, will be out on February 22nd. The Cabal of Hotness, as we call ourselves (*grin*) are also under contract for another round of anthologies, so it’s all very exciting. To get an idea of how all the craziness came to be, you can check out the “primer” here, and please stop by and visit our group page.

fleeingFate_msrFleeing Fate

Jakuta Dagbo knows bad weather’s approaching, even though the sky above the faie world is clear. And when Gràinne Bairdie walks into The Midnight Café wanting an arcane tattoo, he realizes the tempest raging into his life has nothing to do with wind and rain. Just one look at her brings his storm god libido, and the protective instincts he no longer trusts, to thundering life.

Gràinne is a banshee on the run, desperate to claim the emotions she’s sure are rightfully hers and has no time to explore the sparks of need flying between herself and Jakuta. What she’s trying to do will bring the wrath of the Banshee Council down on her head, and she knows they’ll do anything to stop her.

Yet, as Gràinne and Jakuta peel back the layers of their lives, searching for the answers she needs, they can’t ignore the lightning-hot passion searing their blood. And when desire reaches its apex, demanding complete surrender to the cyclone of desire, neither can resist. Even if it means Gràinne’s banshee wail of release will be her last.

Writer Wednesday: Cris Anson

February 13, 2013 by Leta

After taking a break from Writer Wednesday for several months, I’m rebooting it with a new format. From now on, we’ll interview the main characters of the book and then follow up with a few questions for the author. I saw this done elsewhere recently and it really helped me know right away if I’d be interested in the book or not–much more so than a traditional author interview. Hopefully, you guys will also enjoy this change up!

Photobucket

Today I’ll be interviewing the main characters from Cris Anson’s book Mercy and Redemption.

What are your names? And tell us a little about yourselves?

Thanks for asking us here today, Leta. My name is Mercy Howe and I’m a Boston TV chef specializing in colonial cooking. It helps that I live in a mashup of a 1735 kitchen and an 1800s carriage house, because I test my recipes in my walk-in fireplace. I was trekking through an old cemetery in central Massachusetts looking for interesting gravestones to illustrate a book when I heard these two guys raising a ruckus around a gravesite. Turns out they found a common ancestor, so we started a conversation about the past.

Hey there, I’m Adam Connolly, a locally famous sculptor. In a recent issue, Improper New England Magazine named me Most Eligible Bachelor. When I saw Mercy, I wanted to have a horizontal conversation right away, know what I mean? There we were, Seth and me, high-fiving that we found the actual grave of a great-great-great whoever back in the 1700s and this blonde angel comes down the hill and says Hi, guys, what are you doing? And I wanted to, you know, get to know her.

Yeah, we got that. Hi, Leta. Thanks for the warm welcome. Adam and I met at an online genealogical research site. I’m his long-lost cousin, Seth Maddox, an architect near Philadelphia specializing in historic restorations. I’m not as in-your-face as he is. I believe it’s slow and steady that wins the race, if you’ve ever heard of Aesop’s Fables. Which Adam probably hasn’t, he’s so busy bedding every woman within reach. I believe in quality, not quantity.

How did you meet? Was it love at first sight?

It’s Mercy again, and I’ll be answering the rest of your questions, because these guys would just bicker all day long. No, not at first sight, but I was certainly intrigued. I mean, hunks with a capital H, both of them. And such different personalities. Can you keep a secret? The day we met, Adam and I shared more than just a kiss *blushing*. Then the next day Seth researched where I live and visited me, and darned if we didn’t share an itch-scratching as well. So yes, I guess it was love (or at least lust) at first sight—with both of them, except I couldn’t choose between them.

If it wasn’t love at first sight, what changed?

I kept getting flashbacks of a previous life, and I realized that I had known both of them back in the 1690s. That’s right, more than 300 years ago. I was intrigued by the possibility of reincarnation so I kept pushing them both, recreating scenes from my past that I remembered, hoping they’d remember it as well. And yes, that included bedroom scenes *big grin*.

What do you believe is your worst or most frustrating quality? What about his/hers?

*laughs* The guys would probably say my most frustrating quality is my inability to choose between them. Although when I approached them with the idea of a ménage, they both agreed it was a capital idea.

Let’s see, Adam’s worst quality…do you have any idea how frustrating it is to be his date at a black-tie event and see all the groupies swarming around him without even acknowledging that I’m there? And he just stands there and absorbs it without pushing them away. Seth, well, Seth needs a more-than-gentle push. He’s a quiet kind of guy and sometimes a girl just needs to take things into her own hands.

What is your best quality? What about his/hers?

Since my TV cooking show is filmed before a live audience, I have to say it’s my ability to roll with the punches. If I make a blooper, I kind of joke my way out of it. It helps in my personal life, too, such as when I shift between one man and the other and still keep my head. Never once did I mix up their names, even when I was almost out of my mind with—um, never mind. *blushes*

Seth’s best quality is his ability to have fun and find the bright side no matter the situation. Adam’s is the overwhelming force of his personality; you can’t help but be intrigued by him.

If you could have one wish come true, what would it be and why?

Other than world peace? I wish people would have more of an appreciation of the past. We have so much to learn from what our forefathers and foremothers went through, how they struggled, what they fought for. What would that forefather that Adam and Seth found think of flush toilets? Jet planes? Cell phones? So many things we take for granted, like freedom and automatic washing machines and the simple act of reading a book. Do you know there are folks in America who think hamburger comes from a machine? Who have never seen a tomato ripening on a vine? There’s a saying that those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Wouldn’t it be awful if we had to go back to living like it was 1694?

Now tell us a little about you, the writer!

I’m an old broad with a young (dirty) mind. Married twice, loved them both, buried them both, wouldn’t mind someone else to love but he’d better be young enough to keep up with me. I dance like no one is watching because it’s a lifetime habit with me. I remember dancing the polka with my Dad at weddings way back when I was a kid. In fact, he and I won a polka contest at a country club one Octoberfest when it was open to guests. I met my first husband at a singles’ dance during the mini-skirt era. My second husband used to take me dancing to Big Band music with a live 12-piece band. I still jiggle everything at the writers’ conferences I attend, most notably Romanticon. Except now I have to sit down after every two or three songs to catch my breath.

It took me over a dozen years from the time I started writing in earnest to being published. Mercy and Redemption is my 12th release with Ellora’s Cave and I hope to continue writing erotic romance for many years to come. And it would be nice to have some up close and personal inspiration for those love scenes instead of just memories.

From your back catalogue, do you have a secret favorite? If so which book and why?

Of course it would be Dance of the Seven Veils. Not because it was my first Ellora’s Cave book, which by the way just celebrated its eighth anniversary of publication. Not even because it sparked a four-book series. But because it was the coming-of-age story of a 39-year-old woman, a journey to the discovery of her own sensuality. In many ways it’s my story. Because now I’m immersing myself in the BDSM lifestyle so as to write more authoritatively about it. I’m meeting so many interesting people and learning so many things about myself.

Gotta put in a plug here for my blog, Cris Anson’s Passions (http://crisansonspassions.blogspot.com/), where you can read my four-part series on the BDSM for Writers weekend I participated in, including two visits to Paddles, the longest-running BDSM club in New York, and what I experienced there.

What’s next for you?

I don’t want to give away any secrets to those who haven’t yet read Mercy and Redemption, but some of the characters from that book are being featured in the third book of that series. Tentatively entitled Redemption and Glory, it’s a doozy! As a matter of fact, the first scene takes place in a BDSM dungeon, as will a number of subsequent scenes. The characters are exploring their own heretofore dormant tendencies—which one will be the Dominant? the submissive? Or will one or both be a switch? How can they let go of all their conditioned responses and be themselves? It’s fascinating to me as I go along for the ride to uncover their true natures. And honestly? I have no clue how it’s going to turn out. That’s part of the fun.

Lastly, provide me with covers, blurbs, buy links, and where you can be found on the web! 🙂

Here’s the blurb for Mercy and Redemption:

While searching an old cemetery for likely gravestones to illustrate her colonial cookbook, Mercy Howe meets two hunks who are tracing their ancestry, and sparks fly. Literally.

When Mercy casually touches Seth and Adam, her vividly erotic vision involving all three of them feels like a memory, not a dream, and awakens long-dormant sexual urges. Their kisses are achingly familiar, and she welcomes each in turn into her body. Then she spends a no-holds-barred weekend with both men in her bed and discovers an intimacy—and a past—that blows her mind.

As memories resurface from three hundred years ago, Mercy will have to choose whether to relive the experiences from their joint past or forge a new bond with either Seth or Adam. Or both.

Inside Scoop: Contains m/m/f ménage and one doubly satisfied heroine!

Mercy and Redemption and all my books are available at Ellora’s Cave, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other digital venues. You can also learn more about me at my website (http://www.crisanson.com/), my blog, and my Facebook page.

4.5 out of 5 for Ascending Hearts from Joyfully Jay!

February 7, 2013 by Leta

Hooray! We are very happy with this great review from Joyfully Jay!

“So obviously this story is a take on the Jack and the Beanstalk fairy tale.  I was so excited to read this one as we can find Cinderellas and Beauty and the Beasts all over, but this is a story I have never seen translated into romance.  I think the authors did a great job taking the flavor of the traditional tale and building this story from it.  We have a lot of the key elements from the original — the evil giant in the castle in the sky, the magic beanstalk, the hidden gold, and poor Jack with his beleaguered cow.  But from there the authors expand the lore, creating rich back stories for each of the men, especially for Rion, who is only a monster in the original tale.  The story is nicely developed with a lovely feel good ending, capturing the magic of a fairy tale while still keeping enough elements of a more traditional story to keep it grounded.

….this was a really fun story.  If you enjoy a good fairy tale,  I would definitely recommend this unique take on Jack and the Beanstalk.  I found it really well done and it left me with a satisfied smile on my face as the men headed off to their happily ever after.”
