How to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse by The Sisters Grimm.
I have to admit that I think this Zombie/Fairy Tale mash-up post that I penned for Darker Temptations is one of my most interesting blog posts ever. Or maybe I’m just easily amused.

Thanks for having me here today, Leta.
I’m Jocelyn Dex. Araya’s Addiction, an erotic paranormal romance, is my debut short novel. It features “Sempires”, a species of female demon that require semen to survive.
I’m here to share five fantastic things with you. It’s really difficult for me to pick only five but I’ll give it a shot.
Five Fantastic Things
What things do you find fantastic?
I’m offering a $5 Amazon gift card to one person (U.S. & Canada).
Araya’s Addiction Blurb
When Kean wakes up naked, collared and locked in a cell, he knows thinking with his dick has finally gotten him into trouble. Kean, part Incubus, enjoys scorching and frequent sex. One night, he finds himself a prisoner forced to help a Sempire rescue her daughter from certain death.
To gain his freedom, Kean must provide Araya with his semen to save her life, but she refuses it, even though the lust between them is undeniable. Determined to escape and to help Araya, Kean ups the stakes and forces Araya into a situation that makes it impossible for her to continue refusing him. Feeling betrayed, Araya enacts a scheme to get Kean out of her life. Her best laid plans may awaken emotions that will bind them to each other forever.
Here’s where you can find me on the web. I’d love it if you’d like me, fan me, follow me, etc. Ha. Being a new author, I could use the love.

Ten Blank Canvases is obviously a fan of Les Mis! Beautiful work on her nails, capturing the spirit of the characters and the show as a whole on ten, tiny canvases. Lovely!

So, readers (and writers, for that matter), let’s talk about Goodreads. When you leave a review of a book, especially a good review, do you want the author to acknowledge it in some way? I had been told early on that I should not acknowledge any reviews at all by readers on various sites, but now I’m seeing some authors click the ‘like’ button on certain reviews, and other authors thanking the reviewer for saying nice things about their book. This, obviously, has me wondering–what do readers really want?
Now, writers, I know many of you will say, “You shouldn’t read reviews at all ever!” But I have found, so far anyway, that reading reviews is not too emotionally damaging to me. Though, admittedly, the few negative reviews the books have garnered have stuck in my mind in a much more aggressive manner than the more abundant positive reviews. Obviously, my inner fraud terror is looking for ways to beat myself up, but I also think that learning to box that stuff up is a healthy skill. Or so I tell myself! Perhaps I’ll change my mind when I inevitably get more virulent negative reviews in the future.
Regardless–to reply or not to reply? Tell me, oh readers, what do you want most? To be ignored and left alone in your reviews? Or to have an author click ‘like’? Or to have them reply with a gleeful thanks?
For the record, I’m 100% all about ignoring any negative comments, even if they are false and even if they imply the person didn’t even read the book.

1. Today is the last day for people to comment for a chance to win a free copy of Ascending Hearts at Stumbling Over Chaos! Contest closes at 7pm tonight!
2. Over at Cup o’ Porn, Keira and I talk about Five Fairy Tale Hunks we wouldn’t mind finding at the top of our beanstalks. Our post is pretty SFW, but the Cup o’ Porn site itself might be a wee bit riksy! It’s not called Cup o’ Porn for nothing!
5. Ascending Hearts is now available in the Kobo store and the Barnes & Noble Nook Book store.
In other news, I got mind-jacked by a new novel two days ago. It’s not good timing, but the entire thing showed up–characters, plot, settings, motivations, dialogue–absolutely everything. This never happens and so I feel like I’d be an idiot not to follow through. If I’m diligent and lucky I might be able to have a first draft done within two months and then get back on track with my plan for the year.

I’m kind of obsessed about making sure my apartment smells nice. Before I got cats I always had a fancy candle burning. One of the cats singing his tail put a stop to that habit, but I can still use nice air fresheners.
I currently use this dual scent Febreeze plug in thing that I love in one room, and a trusted Glade plug in back in the bedroom. I also spend a lot of time picking out scents that are pleasant, but not overwhelming.
Usually I tend to like sweeter, non-floral fragrances. Apples, cinnamon, chai, clean linen. I’ve probably had a lot of different ones in my apartment over the years! My favorites are always the holiday themed lines that come out for just a few weeks. I might be guilty of stocking up on those.
Since we’ve moved into the digital age and most of us read on our ereaders now, the scent of a book isn’t part of the equation nearly as much as it used to be. When I was younger, I loved the fragrance of my favorite books. How the lingering odor of fresh cut grass clung to the pages of one I’d read outside, how another had an earthy scent because I spilled a little tea on the corner at the kitchen table. It was hard enough then to translate the written words into things like sounds, feels and scents.
In romance books, sometimes I think they should come with a piece of scented paper, like what a sales person at a department store will give you with the latest fragrance spritzed on it. On one side you could have the hero’s scent, and on the other the heroine’s. A fragrance is unique to a person. Because of the way the chemicals react on our skin, no two people can smell exactly the same despite using the same fragrance.
Before I ever sit down to write a hero I do character bios. This includes crazy details that might never make it into the book. One of those things is picking out the hero’s scent. I think it’s as important as anything else I figure out. I mean, I spend way too much time just picking out the fragrance for my apartment, and here I am choosing something to identify my heroes!
I also kind of cheat. Sometimes I go through the candles at a store and smell them to figure out how my heroes will smell! What I love is that a lot of places have begun to carry more masculine scented things. Here’s some of my favorites:
Bamboo and Green Tea – this one is soothing, has an earthy hint to it. I picture this hero as the quiet, unexpected romance. He might be the guy next door or the boy you used to go to study hall with, but he’s not a total rule follower.
Amaretto – this is a liquor scented option. This is your GQ guy, classy, maybe a bit of a corporate bad boy.
Indian Musk – a blend of Indian spices, sandalwood and musk, it’s exotic and a bit down to earth. This is the guy who can wear jeans and a t-shirt, but also dress it up. He’s going to surprise you.
Smoke – this sounds weird, I know, but there’s actually a fragrance that is designed to smell like a pleasant smoke aroma. The secondary perk of this one? It eliminates other odors, so that man of mystery, your secret agent or maybe undercover cop, he’s free to smell good and keep his mysteriousness!
I could go on, but you get the idea. Scents have personalities to them, why we chose them tells something about ourselves.
What do you like your heroes to smell of?

It can never be said that Sidney Bristol has had a ‘normal’ life. She is a recovering roller derby queen, former missionary, and tattoo addict. She grew up in a motor-home on the US highways (with an occasional jaunt into Canada and Mexico), traveling the rodeo circuit with her parents. Sidney has lived abroad in both Russia and Thailand, working with children and teenagers. She now lives in Texas where she splits her time between a job she loves, writing, reading and belly dancing.

The last thing Christine wants to do is another favor for her sister, but Lucy always gets what she wants. This time it’s Chris playing sub to a demanding Dom. Their relationship begins with a power exchange and progresses to time spent between the sheets. Now emotions are getting complicated and the Dom isn’t just a hunky guy in black.
Daniel’s expectations are turned upside down when he meets Chris. She’s more than a well-trained submissive. She’s a woman with a body he wants to memorize. He’s willing to spend as much time as it takes to learn her, because she might be his match and his muse. He’ll make her come so hard he’s imprinted on every inch, and then he’ll offer her the most precious thing he can, himself.

I’m not sure if this counts as a fanwork, necessarily, but I figure I might as well claim that it is. If I am a fan of Casey Stratton’s, then I’m going to assume that two girls who put so much time, effort, and passion into choreographing a dance to one of his more obscure songs are fans, too.

I keep seeing the above everywhere. Facebook, Tumblr, Livejournal, and emails. It’s always put forth with this kind of snooty superiority that basically just screams, “If nothing else, at least I’m not a slut!” Guys, guys, guys, come on. Every time I see this posted, all I can think of is this.
What is slut-shaming?
Please read that linked essay. It says it all so well. Basically, calling a woman out about her sexual choices–to have sex with no people, one person, many people–does not serve women or men well in the long run for multiple reasons, including the fact that it promotes an atmosphere of victim blaming when it comes to rape.
So, this short post is a call to all women to stop posting that damn picture around the interwebs! All it tells me is that you are slut-shaming your fellow women and that you are insecure about your own desirability and sexual choices. Please, if you’re going to post anything, post something like, “Fuck who you want, when you want, so long as you have clear consent and good communication.” The end.

You’ll need to follow this lovely link to watch a really beautiful fanvid. It’s not even a show that I watch (anymore), but I thought it was gorgeous and beautifully done. Go on over and have a gander. I know there are a couple of hoops to jump through, but it’s worth it.

Based on Jack & the Beanstalk, Ascending Hearts is at turns angsty, romantic, sexy and hopeful.

No sane man would dare risk the climb—but Jack has nothing left to lose. Shunned for his evil red hair and abandoned by his cruel lover, he’s desperate to escape his life.
Rion isn’t a giant, only a man bearing the burden of protecting his family’s legacy. It’s a lonely existence, but he’s duty bound. Then Jack appears, and Rion’s world changes. After a blazing confrontation, undeniable lust sparks. Isolated in the clouds, Jack and Rion give in to their desire and growing connection. Recycling. Yep. I finally sucked up the $100 per year fee to start recycling pick-up from my house. You know what this means, right? I’m officially a better person than I was last year! Yes! It’s an instant thing–recycling = good human. And I did it! Apparently instant better-person-ness can be purchased for $100 a year! Good to know.
I know, I know, it’s appalling that it’s taken this long for me to make this happen. But recycling isn’t an easy thing in my neck of the woods–unless you’ve got the money for curbside and until recently I didn’t. So, rather than focusing on how I used to suck so much–less than 24 hours ago, even! Let’s focus on how much more awesome I am now that I’ve paid the $100 a year to be a good person!
Go me!

In my mind, this has always been a song for the end of one year and the beginning of another. I might be the only one who sees it that way, though.
Regardless, looks like we’re done here, folks! It’s been fun and tiring and very holiday! Hope you enjoyed the tunes!
Happy New Year! May it be a good one!
